As a Game Master, your campaign world is a labor of love. Hundreds of hours spent crafting NPCs, drawing maps, and weaving complex plot threads. But where does all that data actually live?
In most modern apps, the answer is "on someone else's server." This is fine until that server goes down, the company changes its pricing model, or—heaven forbid—they shut down entirely.
Codex Cryptica takes a different path. We call it Local-First.
What is Local-First?
Local-First software gives you the best of both worlds: the reliability of an offline app and the convenience of the cloud.
- Your world is always available. You don't need an internet connection to prep your session or check a note during play.
- You own your files. Your data is stored in your browser's internal storage (OPFS) and can be mirrored to any folder on your computer.
- Privacy by default. We can't read your notes because they never leave your device unless you choose to sync them.
The Power of Synchronization
While your data lives on your device, we know you probably want to work on your campaign from multiple machines—maybe your desktop at home and your laptop at the game table.
Instead of building a proprietary cloud that traps your data, Codex Cryptica uses Local Folder Synchronization.
How it works:
- Select a Folder: You choose a directory on your computer to "mirror" your internal archives.
- Automatic Mirroring: As you edit in Codex, the app automatically updates the files in that folder.
- Use Your OS for the Rest: By selecting a folder managed by a cloud client (like Google Drive for Desktop, Dropbox, or iCloud), your operating system handles the cloud synchronization for you.
Why this is a Win for GMs
- Freedom of Choice: Want to use Dropbox instead of Drive? No problem.
- Open Formats: Your chronicles are stored as standard Markdown files. If you ever stop using Codex, you can open your world in any text editor.
- Security: Your cloud credentials stay with your OS, not with us.
Building for the Long Haul
Campaigns can last years. By building on local-first principles, we're ensuring that your creative work is as durable as the dice on your table. Your world belongs to you—exactly as it should be.
Happy world-building!
